3 Ways to Avoid Dry Skin this Winter

January 25, 2015

Dry air and cold weather mean dry, itchy skin this time of year for many residents of New Jersey. If you have sensitive skin, you are more susceptible to flaky or chapped lips and skin. But dry air can impact us all and, unfortunately, many skin care products and soaps only make it worse. According to dermatologist, Dr. Steven Daveluy of Wayne State University Group, “The key to healthy skin in the winter is reducing the things that dry your skin and increase things that help moisturize.” One of the best ways to improve dry air conditions at home is to add a whole house humidifier. You can eliminate that dry eye, nose and throat feeling and lessen the effects of static electricity on your family and electronics in your home. Humidified air feels warmer too. With a whole house humidifier, you can lower your thermostat without a significant difference in your comfort level. A.J. Perri offers Aprilaire whole house humidifiers. Here are a few additional tips to keep your skin moisturized and healthy during harsh weather: • Limit your time in the bath or shower and use warm water rather than hot. The American Academy of Dermatology also recommends you close your bathroom door while in the shower or bath. • Use non-greasy hand creams over regular lotion. Unscented formulas with oil like olive or jojoba are a good choice. You should apply hand cream liberally immediately after a bath or shower or washing your hands. • Wear gloves and scarves when you go outside to protect your hands and face from the wind and dry air. You will also benefit from wearing protective gloves when you clean with water or chemicals. The first place we notice dry skin is on our hands.
